Located in Toronto’s Lawrence Park
neighbourhood, Blythwood Road was
constructed as a link between Yonge
Street and the first north-south street
to its east, Bayview Avenue. In 2003 the
Blythwood Road Heritage Conservation
District (HCD) was created, establishing
guidelines to ensure that alterations
to buildings within the district “enhance
and sustain the unique heritage
character of the District”. The District
contains buildings from a range of
periods, including our Client’s Craftsman
home, built in 1921.

Our challenge was to update and
expand the home with expansive
light-filled spaces, while retaining the
scale, proportion, and character of the
existing structure

We designed common spaces to reflect
the Owner’s love for books, music, and
entertaining. The dramatic two storey
library was carved out of the existing
volume, filtering light into the centre of
the home, while acting as a backdrop
for intimate musical performances.

In the spirit of Craftsman homes
of years past, we designed custom
dining furniture as an extension of
the architecture. Exposed joinery
details and classic forms recall the
home’s heritage roots.

Courtyard

Progressing to the rear of the home,
a landscaped courtyard separates the
kitchen and solarium from living spac-es,
and clearly delineates the old home
from the new addition.
